The Folklore Project at Bethak, funded by the Lord Mayor’s Charity, brings stories, folk music and cultural heritage together in a welcoming arts and heritage space in the heart of Sparkbrook.
Working with communities across Sparkbrook and the surrounding areas, the project creates a safe and inclusive space where people can reconnect with their heritage, share the stories they grew up with and celebrate the music and traditions that have travelled with them across generations.
At RAQS Arts, we believe that stories and folk music are more than memories – they are living heritage. They carry the voices of our elders, preserve cultural identity and tell us something about the people and communities that have shaped different eras.
The project is particularly focused on creating meaningful cultural opportunities within communities that can experience social and economic disadvantage. Through storytelling, folk music and creative participation, we aim to empower local people to become not simply audiences, but the storytellers and keepers of their own heritage.
We were delighted to welcome Lord Mayor Councillor Zakir Chaudhary to Bethak, where he spent time with the group, listened to their stories and music, and showed great appreciation for the creativity, warmth and cultural richness within the space.
His visit was a special moment for our participants and an important recognition of the value of community-led arts and heritage.
Stories shape generations. Music carries memories. At Bethak, they come together to keep our heritage alive.
