An Evening with Dev Joshi

As part of our South Asian Heritage Month celebrations, RAQS Arts had the privilege of hosting acclaimed singer and performer Dev Joshi for a memorable evening celebrating music, storytelling, heritage and community.

The event brought people together from across Birmingham for an evening filled with timeless melodies, stories and shared cultural memories. Dev Joshi captivated the audience through his music and storytelling, creating a beautiful connection between generations and reminding us of the important role music plays in keeping our heritage alive.

The audience response brought a wonderful energy to the evening, with guests joining in with the music, sharing memories and connecting through a shared celebration of culture and heritage.

At RAQS Arts, our work is rooted in the communities we serve. We work closely with Birmingham’s diverse ethnic minority communities, creating opportunities for people to participate in the arts, develop their creativity and, most importantly, tell their own stories in their own voices.

South Asian Heritage Month gives us an important opportunity to celebrate the richness and diversity of South Asian heritage, but our commitment extends far beyond a single month. Throughout the year, we create spaces where stories, music, oral traditions and lived experiences can be shared, celebrated and passed from one generation to the next.

We believe that communities should not simply be represented in the arts – they should have the opportunity to shape, create and lead their own cultural narratives.

Music is one of the most powerful ways of doing this. It crosses language, age and cultural boundaries. A familiar melody can bring back a memory, reconnect someone with their roots and create a sense of belonging. It allows us to celebrate where we have come from while creating new memories together.

This evening reflected the wider vision of RAQS Arts: empowering communities through creativity, preserving cultural heritage and creating meaningful spaces where every story has value and every voice has the opportunity to be heard.
